  • Renowned for Sound

Waterloo may have recently been voted the greatest Eurovision-winning song, but its namesake album isn’t a breakthrough in itself despite the odd highlight here and there. ABBA in time would have to work hard to prove that it wasn’t a Eurovision one-hit wonder.

Nothing remarkable about songs such as 'Hasta Manana', yet there is enough remarkable things about 'Honey Honey' and the title song to not dismiss this 'Waterloo' album entirely. .

"Dance (While the Music Still Goes On)" is on the money as the embodiment of the Euro-disco sound that the group would embrace on their future albums, although it also hints at a vague oldies sound, with a melody that somehow reminds this listener of both the Four Seasons' "Dawn" and the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby."

Your average generic pop record by unexperienced pop guys. Some nasty stuff, some just not very good.

Unfortunately, much the supporting material is done so poorly that I couldn't help but give this ABBA album another 7 rating.

While it’s unlikely that the extra tracks will be played everyday, they give you an idea of the scope of ABBA’s ambition and the willingness of Björn and Benny to experiment with the tracks till they finally reached a form with which they were happy.

    - none of the material here is actually offensive to listen to, no matter how slight it may appear on the surface. FAIR. Not particularly bad, not particularly good.

This album is not as disco and danced infused as ABBA’s later recordings. I’m not sure they knew what they were doing, but they invented a style of music that still reverberates in music and popular culture today.

This is a more homogenous album, though it features some weak numbers, the major part is perfect pop.
