  • Good Call Live

Through the use of crossing genre techniques, vocal styles and a mix of live and in-the-box instrumentation, the record presents itself as an experimental, undefinable epithet to pop versatility and ambiguity. The perfect accompaniment to a trip to the scooter park with the boys.

Ugly Is Beautiful is bloated at 14 tracks, with several recycled singles in the mix. Tree’s voice—always a little shouty, a little whiny—is riddled with distortion, casting a fuzzed-out sameness over even the more left-field selections, like the runway thumper “1993.” After a while, you wonder why he doesn’t hurry up and join Twenty One Pilots.

Out of ‘retirement’, the US meme machine’s years-in-the-making debut combines irony, humour and unexpectedly deep lyricism to prove the digital rockstar's talents lie far beyond the remit of mere ‘internet troll’

It’s bold, badass, and a damn shame that he’s already dropped his next bomb: his early retirement away from music. Pray it’s just another scheme, because I’d love to see more from Oliver Tree.

Overall, this is a good, solid effort and compelling debut effort from an artist very much worth keeping an eye on. Oliver Tree is as enigmatic as he is strange, and I believe with a bit more refinement he could become one of the greats in his own right.

Everything about the long-awaited album, both the good and the not-as-good, suggests nothing but potential for growth. While his compositional skills are unrefined, Oliver’s ability to craft a hook, his potent lyrics, and his willingness to experiment with every sound under the sun are invaluable traits in any serious pop artist. Should new material emerge from his bowl-shaped cranium in the future, this lively debut gives me every reason to come back for more.

One thing that is incredibly impressive about Tree, throughout the album, is his ability to ensure the listener doesn’t take any one moment too seriously or equally to pass it off as a joke either, using lyrical whit to guide the way.
