surfin' safari

Surfin' Safari is the debut album by American rock band the Beach Boys, released on October 1, 1962 on Capitol Records. The official production credit went to Nick Venet, though it was Brian Wilson with his father Murry who contributed substantially to the album's production; Brian also wrote or co-wrote nine of its 12 tracks. The album peaked at No. 32 in its 37-week run on the US charts. The album was preceded by two singles: "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari", which charted at Nos. 75 and 14, respectively. The success of "Surfin' Safari" helped secure a full album for the group while an additional single, "Ten Little Indians", was issued, charting at No. 49. - WIKIPEDIA

The Beach Boys' debut album, recorded in an era in which little was expected of rock groups in the way of strong LP-length statements, is mostly thin and awkward in both the songwriting and production departments.

1968-Whether laying on the couch, relaxing by a beach, or loading up the woody for a surf trip, the quintessential summer-sounds this album introduces us to really are fine, like a '409.'

2010- "Surfin' Safari" is a great record. It's grungy and dirty and raw and I like it.

2014- It's a short record, easy to listen to, but certainly no masterpiece.

2007-Not nearly as strong as they will be when their skills are refined and Brian Wilson's songwriting grows, "Surfin' Safari" remains a worthwhile listen and a hankering back to a time when rock and roll music was still such innocent fun.

So, these early albums are very much weak and pretty much ignored when rock critics discuss their artistic merits. But, I will tell ya that it's still very fun sifting through all their early material.

  • Wilson & Alroy's Record Reviews

A pathetic attempt to dress up a couple of A-sides (title track; "Surfin'") with a string of novelty songs, all recorded quickly and without studio musicians - the band couldn't afford them yet, but they couldn't play their instruments either, so the result is paper-thin, hokey, and now so dated that it seems like one big put-on.

2018- I just listened to The Beach Boys’s first album and it clearly shows. Most of the songs feel like filler content and their vocals are not as good as later albums but it wasn’t awful by any means.

Weak lead vocals and some filler still fail to completely destroy the debut Beach Boys recording album.
