  • PopMatters

Kelsea Ballerini’s Subject to Change suggests another genre-bending, boundary-pushing country crossover record, but it’s her most conservative work to date.

  • The Musical Divide

There are, admittedly, a few trite moments like “Universe” and “Walk in the Park” that feel like they get overshadowed here by better tracks. But I don’t know … alongside easily being her best project to date, this just might be genuinely great – here’s to hoping it doesn’t go overlooked.

  • Holler

SUBJECT TO CHANGE strikes a carefully poised balance between restlessness and contentment, celebration and elegy, assurance and vulnerability. The most important of gifts that Ballerini gives us, though, is a record so affectionately her own.

  • Off the Record

It’s an album that exudes joy and optimism, as she enters this new era in her professional and personal life. There’s a sense throughout the album that Ballerini is shaking off the shackles of who people think she should be and stepping into her true personal and musical identity. It’s an album that engages and improves with every listen, with more to unpack in the lyrics and instrumentation with each re-listen. More than anything though, it is immense fun and riotous joy that will stay with you long after you’ve finished with Track 15.

This is Kelsea Ballerini! This is what she is telling us across the songs on offer here. There’s an unpredictable duality to her that some people just can’t handle but it shouldn’t be up to her to change just to fit our expectations, it should be up to us to broaden our horizons to match hers, because hers stretch all the way from Nashville to the West Coast and beyond! This is an album that is only going to get better the more you listen to it as you unpack all the melodies, harmonies and messages contained within it. ‘Subject to Change’ is simple and fun on the surface but there are some raging waters buried deep beneath. Let’s hope you’ve got the strength to swim the journey alongside her.

  • Your Life in a Song

Subject To Change is such a refreshing listen, and a powerful reminder that it’s ok not to always be ok. Kelsea airs her dirty laundry in such an open-book style, and in such an endearing, loveable way, accepting her faults whilst confidently wearing her own skin throughout. Her best and most mature work to date, and easily one of the classiest albums of 2022.

  • Building Our Own Nashville

Subject to Change is collectively a great album that is strengthened by its blend of pop and traditional country. Kelsea writes from a very honest and beautiful place, in particular within her ballads. Her youthful yet experienced vocals are empowering and her lyrics are inspiring.

Despite the confusing production, it still sounds good and, strangely, doesn’t cause me to lose sense of what the album is about. I’ll be dividing many of these songs into my collection of playlists, but I doubt I’ll ever listen to the album all the way through again — despite there being minimal skips. Ballerini is an incredibly talented singer-songwriter, but I wish “Subject To Change” understood its sound a bit better.

Ballerini’s lyrics build everyday experiences and emotions up into pastel-colored sets wherein the exploration of her doubts and values feels honest, but her landing is softened with just a touch of imagination should she fall. (Maybe call it fractured fairytale music?) Ultimately, that’s what makes this record dance on the line between country and pop: it’s earnest personal storytelling placed beneath a hopeful, larger-than-life lens.

Overall it is hard to find fault with ‘SUBJECT TO CHANGE’ as it showcases Ballerina as an all round singer, songwriter and entertainer. It’s a strong contender for album of the year.
