PRETTIES FOR YOU

Pretties for You is the debut studio album by American rock band Alice Cooper, released on June 25, 1969 by Straight Records. At this time, the name "Alice Cooper" referred to the band and not its lead singer Vincent Furnier, although he was also known as Alice Cooper. The album has a psychedelic flavor to it; the group had yet to develop the more concise hard rock sound that they would become famous for. -Wikipedia

a bizarre, experimental album filled with jarring melodies and dream-like meandering. Only by the end does it begin to cohere, hinting ever-so-slightly at the emergence of their future classic sound

There are so many interesting songs that I want to mention them all here, so in this case I'll let my track reviews stand on their own. If you're a Cooper fan who hasn't heard this album, you may be shocked, but it's definitely worth a listen.

Nice Beefheart imitation for a bunch of sloppy garage kids, but don't try this at home!

This music is UGLY music. The guitar tones are messy, scraggly and unpleasant, the production is flatter than a waffle

1969 - But neither is there any hint of life, spontaneity, joy, rage, or any kind of authentic passion or conviction. As such, Alice Cooper’s music is, for this reviewer at any rate, totally dispensable.

the album is an interesting time capsule of the transition between psych and metal that was happening around 1969-1970. Although not a classic album, there is enough here to grab the ear of even a casual Cooper fan. Pretty indeed.

2015 - The album has some great moments, and given that we now know the direction Cooper took later on, “Pretties For You” also stands as an interesting musical artefact showing what could have been, and it certainly does not deserve to be completely forgotten.
