Show All-
AllMusic
The opener "All Summer" is candied perfection, a 1970s soft-rock melody given a spiffy reupholstering," "Heaven Had a Dance Floor" is a new wave spin on adult contemporary new wave, "Gold" is a bright rewrite of Maren Morris' "Rich," "Song Back" is a bright, pulsating number for a mature dance floor, while "Whiskey Colored Eyes" provides an ideal soundtrack for a sepia-toned sunset. These are the songs that give Mr. Sun its pulse and help keep things humming on this amiable affair.

Cryptic Rock
It’s a distraction that can make Mr. Sun feel like an advertisement for drowning your sorrows in anything, or everything, available at the local liquor store. And this is part of the irony of the collection, which tends toward melancholia and loss. Yet, golden like its titular reference, it sonically embraces the infectious rays of yesteryear with its bell-bottomed Seventies influences and Easy Listening vibes. There is, of course, the necessary twang (“Better Love,” “God Fearing Gypsies”) and even some Eighties’ sass (“Gold”), all before the group culminates in some of the album’s finest moments, including the ballads “Different Without You” and “Friends of Mine,” a toast to goodness.

Rolling Stone
The hitmaking country group's latest is smooth and sweet, with just the right undercurrent of sadness.
-
The Nash News
Even with so many projects to their credit, this new release sees the group taking risks all while staying true to their artistry.
-
Holler
Little Big Town confidently explore different themes and ideas through collaborations with various songwriting powerhouses, while still offering their own insightful charm.
-
Country Swag
As one of country music’s most consistent band of music-makers, Little Big Town continues to shine on Mr. Sun, offering listeners a bright spot through even the darkest of days.

The Musical Divide
I do still think the good moments outweigh the bad overall and that, again, the oddly disjointed feel of this project doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me. But it does mean the album is bloated, doesn’t play as well to the band’s strengths as it should, and feels misguided in what it’s trying to achieve anyway. Not bad, but I prefer the night before rather than the morning afterward.

Yours Truly
“Mr. Sun” has a strong emphasis on hope for the future, the value of relationships, and family; it also touches on heartache and letting go, but it’s full of happiness and light.
