2015 - The songs – ... – represent a refinement of the band’s aesthetic – a healthy middle ground between the avant garde stylings of the first two albums and Reed’s Top 40 sensibilities.

what the Velvets left behind was a creative legacy that—similar to their swan-song album—was loaded with twists and innovations, and that even included having a few hits

2015 - That said, this package is a must for fans who don’t already own much of the group’s work. Loaded—the Velvets’ fourth record and the second to issue from the post-John Cale version of the band—is a fascinating classic.

2015 - The album is generally considered the band’s weakest -- and the fact that it includes the classics “Sweet Jane” and “Rock and Roll” is a testament to the genius of the band’s other three albums. The set includes virtually every imaginable permutation of the album

it has its fair share of great tunes on it, and that's good enough for me. Due to its accessibility, this might even be a good entry point for anyone looking to get into their discography but are too afraid to go head-first into their artsier previous albums.

Reed wasn't messing around by this point. Every track is solid and commercial, and the recording methods are more sophisticated than on any previous album back to and Nico, if only slightly.

The Velvets are to Manhattan what the Rascals are to New York--that is, they really make "Rock & Roll" (a title), but they're also really intellectual and ironic.

2015 - The band’s versatility and endless imagination can be compared to great jazz groups reinventing tunes each evening of a residency.

2015 - It’s a mishmash of styles, tones and attitudes that comes to feel like a true work of art, not despite its contradictions, but because of them.

  • Louder Sound

2015 - Loaded on its own usually suffices but the addition of a fan-recorded Live At Second Fret, Philadelphia (circa May 1970), provides context while stripping away the light touch and bursts of Brill Building and barbershop so integral to the main event.

Loaded isn’t a bad swansong for a pivotal band in rock’s history, but at the same time it’s hardly representative of their oeuvre – it feels more like a Lou Reed solo album than a Velvet Underground album.
