LET'S GET IT ON

Let's Get It On is the thirteenth studio album by American singer and songwriter Marvin Gaye. It was released on August 28, 1973, by Tamla Records. Recording sessions for the album took place during June 1970 to July 1973 at Hitsville U.S.A. and Golden World Studio in Detroit, and at Hitsville West in Los Angeles. Serving as Gaye's first venture into the funk genre and romance-themed music, Let's Get It On incorporates smooth soul, doo-wop, and quiet storm. -wikipedia

If you're actually listening to the record, rather than using it as background music, it gets monotonous.

Embellishing his hedonistic thoughts with lush strings, sinuous sax, right-on rhythms, and some prominent backing vocals from The Originals (a semi-successful Motown band Marvin sometimes mentored), Gaye’s wondrous voice dances around eight supremely soulful and sexy songs.

It all sounds the same, and though in limited doses it's fine, by the end of the album you're half asleep.

1973 - And yet he continues to transmit that same degree of intensity, sending out near cosmic overtones while eloquently phrasing the sometimes simplistic lyrics.

2013 - certainly one of Gaye’s best recordings, but as mentioned earlier, in my opinion, the album is one of those where you can see the past, present, and future all wrapped in one tight package

2016 - Let’s Get It On, was significantly more candidly sexual in nature, seductive, soulful, and funky. It was well recorded, and mixed with incredible finesse, including layering Gaye’s vocals, rendering them deep, and alluring.

2001 - Silky and seductive, the fluid grooves and Gaye's aching vocals made Let's Get It On the perfect foundation for the slow jams that would follow in the decades to come--often imitated, but never duplicated.

  • Albumism

2018 - There have been artists who have ridden the coattails of others to success while a select few blaze a pathway so bright that everyone else follows suit. Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On was and still is that radiant light.

2004 - In the steppin' remix, the groove is more glorious than ever. More relaxed than the original syncopation
