On an 81-minute double album, the EGOT singer-songwriter enlists an impressive roster of guests to help bring more fun—and funk—to his music than he has in years.

With 24 songs but no great experimentation, the American’s eighth studio album doesn’t live up to its billing.

Overall, “LEGEND” is one of Legend’s best works, as it showcases his growth as an artist and person. The only thing that holds this album back is the number of songs. Even though Legend explained the reason for the number of songs, it still does not change the fact that a large amount of songs can make it difficult for the listener to keep track of where they are in the album. Most artists will release an album with around 10–12, and then a deluxe album with closer to 20 songs. Legend could have added a transitional track between the two parts of the album to make it more interesting for the listeners. Despite this issue, the album is still successful and shows why his name is John Legend.

Given how Legend always seems to take himself a little too seriously, it’s a minor miracle what a sharp, snappy groove, some salacious lyrics, and an undeniable hook can do. Act 1 is essentially a neo-soul project with little of the reverent restraint that often comes with that kind of music.

For an artist with undeniable talent, virtually every other song on Legend could swap out the headliner for any one of the innumerable, interchangeable singers who have churned out material indistinguishable from it.

My favorite John Legend album is his debut one. I can honestly say that LEGEND is my second favorite one by him. I just love how mature, comfortable, and daring he sounds on the album. The project is 24 tracks, so sit back, relax and appreciate the legend that is John.

For all his success, Legend is something of an everyman, albeit a very talented one. Speaking to a wide range of audiences, this LP has a song for every mood: you want to start a party? There's a song for that. You want to soundtrack your dinner? John's got you covered. One thing leading to the next? Don't sweat it, just stick this on. You may just wish he trimmed the fat a little so you could match the desired mood sooner.

This album was masterfully put together, hitting the mark with the perfect star-studded features and creating an interesting dynamic between Act I and Act II. The composition of each track communicates a genuine feeling, whether it’d be celebrating the beautiful things in life or dealing with losses. That being said, this album was one from the heart. There is no doubt that by next week a minimum of two tracks will find their rightful places in the R&B charts as well.
