It's Only Rock 'n Roll

It's Only Rock 'n Roll is the 12th British and 14th American studio album by The Rolling Stones, released in 1974. It was the last Rolling Stones album for guitarist Mick Taylor and the songwriting and recording of the album's title track had a connection to Taylor's eventual replacement, Ronnie Wood. The album also marked the 10th anniversary since the release of the band's debut album, The Rolling Stones. It's Only Rock 'n Roll combines the core blues and rock 'n' roll-oriented sound with elements of funk and reggae. It's Only Rock 'n Roll reached #1 in the United States and #2 in the UK. -Wikipedia

one of the most intriguing and mysterious, as well as the darkest, of all Rolling Stones records

It's uneven, but at times It's Only Rock 'n Roll catches fire. The songs and performances are stronger than those on Goats Head Soup; the tossed-off numbers sound effortless, not careless.

What you end up with is an album that’s never less than engaging but also rarely approaches exceptional.

All in all, It's Only Rock 'n Roll has a very good feel throughout, the kind of album that leaves a smile on your face when it reaches its end.

Quick, punchy, straight-ahead and twisted, lyrical and utterly honest in the shrug-of-a-shoulder manner the Stones nailed down so long ago, the Stones have made the best album of 1974

The lyrics throughout are far weaker than on their key records, but if you listen to the Stones for their lyrics you're a rare breed.

It’s Only Rock ‘N Roll offers sparks of inspiration – Fingerprint File, Dance Little Sister, the title track – amid stuff that sounds suspiciously like formula and filler: that said, compared to what was to come, it’s a masterpiece.

I hear enough new hooks and arresting bass runs and audacious jokes to stretch over three ordinary albums--or do I mean two?
