  • Pitchfork

Released in conjunction with an animated Netflix film, Kid Cudi’s latest is a pleasant surprise—a minor project that features some of his most purely enjoyable music in a decade.

  • Complex

Rather than recreating the gloominess that made him iconic in his own right, Cudi has reemerged with a positive spin on his otherworldly charisma. With Kid Cudi’s bona fide legacy entering a new chapter, Entergalactic initiates the rapper-actor’s furthering of his pursuit of happiness.

  • Rolling Stone

While nothing here comes close to the sonic risks Cudi felt free to take earlier in his career, he makes up for that shortcoming by creating one of his easiest listens to date. For an artist who’s often made his mental-health struggles central to his art, it’s gratifying to hear him sound healed and happy. He may not be as challenging, but he’s easier to love.

t’s affecting and pretty throughout its 90-minute running time, a banquet of ear and eye candy. You know where it’s heading before it gets there, and you have a lot of fun anyway. That’s worth something.

This is my favorite Kid Cudi album in a while. While I don’t think that there are a bunch of standout tracks, the way it flows, the people Cudi decided to work with, and the easygoing nature of it really makes it a good listen to me.

There's a peculiar air about ‘Entergalactic’. As a total project with the Netflix special, there have been delays and rescheduling, and it's hard to get a sense of whether the album is the companion to the movie, or vice versa. Having heard this as a standalone piece of work, though, you may not feel inclined to tune in to the visual component.

  • Commedia

Kid Cudi has said that this might be his last album and that he might focus on making more movies and TV series. If that is the case, “Entergalactic” was a great way for him to cap off an impressive music career.

  • Slant Magazine

Rather than feeling grounded in its everyday struggles, Entergalactic comes across more like a black hole of imagination. A handful of druggy daydreams extol a generic, spacey “power of creativity” reminiscent of commercials for children, and those are the best of the story’s sporadic attempts to take advantage of an animated format. If the character models are initially striking for their painterly shading, they quickly lose their novelty in a procession of dull camera angles indistinguishable from some particularly listless live-action cinematography.

However, when Entergalactic shines, it shines with multicoloured brilliance. It is a nostalgic call-back to the beginning of Cudi’s career and, although it works best when paired with its visual companion, it still manages to stand surprisingly well on its own as another hit in Cudi’s discography.

  • Out The Box

So, I know Kid Cudi wasn’t trying to make an album for the sake of making an album, but this is just how it goes. I’m not here to review the show, I’m here to review the group of music that Kid Cudi has brought all of us. I will say that there are some good songs, but the collection of work is not something that I would consider a highlight of Cudi’s musical endeavor. I’m glad he brought some good songs to this album, but as a whole, it’s just not a strong record in the Cudi catalog.

  • The Needle Drop

While far from Cudi's most exciting music, Entergalactic does work pretty well as a standalone album, as opposed to just a soundtrack.

  • The Nuance Magazine

All in all, Scott Mescudi continues to push the envelope on what a traditional album cycle appears to be for artists. He constantly is on the front lines of innovation and originality in music. Entergalactic is Cudi’s most ambitious piece of work yet, creating a dazzling visual spectacle for Netflix with an R&B soundtrack that is his most content work to date.

  • The Weekly Coos

Entergalactic is a futile waste for both fans and non-fans. There is little merit, if at all, as it is a translation of the animated text released on Netflix, and it’s equally so. I started tuning out rather quickly, but when that extra spark of the joint hit, it kept me going. Though not with musical positivity radiating in my ears, more mediocrity and steps below.

  • Ben's Beat

If this is truly Kid Cudi’s final album, the greater project that is 2020’s Man On The Moon III will likely be remembered with that label in the future for closing out so many of his running narratives with some more engaging music. Of course, Cudi’s endlessly creative talents are going to be applied to many other areas – and if he’s done with music, I’m excited to see what he does next.

  • The Poly Post

I believe Cudi did a fantastic job merging the album and animated series into one massive project, showing the fans his “crazy idea” and doing something that has never been done before. I’ve always seen Kid Cudi as a storyteller through his music, and after seeing him create something other than music, I’m convinced he can do just about anything because he’s ambitious and super talented.

  • Legends Will Never Die

As far as sound goes, he throws it back to the early days of his career & the cohesive concept of it is pretty well told.

  • Consequence

But if the point of Entergalactic, the special, is to play as a companion piece for Entergalactic, the album, then keeping things simple makes sense. This is through and through a vibes experience, an opportunity to escape into a fantasy of being young, beautiful, talented, and free to, as Kid Cudi sings on one track, “do what I want.” Sometimes, there’s nothing wrong with a simple love story.

  • Hype

Kid Cudi's "Entergalactic" accomplishes its job in providing a visual medium in which the artist may articulate his vision to his fans. Its talented star-studded cast keeps the special's brief and cliche plot afloat with energy and personality to spare. By far, the visuals are the highlight of the special, and for that alone, we believe it worth a watch.
