Critic Reviews
Show All-
Pitchfork
The Canadian rapper’s latest album finds moments of real depth and humanity. The rest of the time, his verses register as monotonous and tame, his energy dictated by A-list collaborators.

Slant Magazine
As far as homages go, they don’t get much more passionless than this, a sentiment which easily doubles as a fitting assessment of Demons Protected by Angels as a whole.

The Needle Drop
When the world needed NAV the most, he returned.

AllMusic
On fourth studio album Demons Protected by Angels, Canadian rapper and mainstream success story NAV shows more of himself in multiple ways, co-producing the majority of the record and moving away slightly from the usual shallow materialism of his lyrics for more personal material. NAV reveals feelings of vulnerability and loneliness on some tracks, while concentrating on jewelry, money, and fame on the more club-ready songs.

HipHop DX
NAV 'DEMONS PROTECTED BY ANGELS' BIDS FOR EMOTION BUT STILL SOUNDS HOLLOW.

Ratings Game Music
I didn’t realize how much I missed NAV until today. While I don’t think that he is the best rapper in the world, the best singer in the world, or the most believable gangsta in the world, I do think that he has a sound that feels authentic and sympathizable. In other words, though he talks about the same things 90% of the rappers in the world talk about today, there’s something about his delivery that makes him stand out. Demons Protected By Angels is a 19-track project that oozes music that feels so damn intoxicating.

When it comes to features, it includes a laundry list of his go-to collaborators like Lil Uzi Vert, Gunna and Lil Durk. He recently revealed that he chose not to include a Drake track on the album so it wouldn’t overshadow the rest of the project. While we’ll hopefully get the song on a deluxe, this kind of discipline is respectable and shows why NAV continues to make good (if not great) albums.
