Taken on their own, Gomez’s and Lovato’s albums aren’t breaking any radical new pop ground. In fact, both could have benefited by taking inspiration from the other.

Lovato mistakes the ability to cram as many syllables as possible into each word with virtuosity. And the album likewise mistakes overwrought for confident.

Not unlike her third studio effort Unbroken, this album finds Demi recovering from the ashes of her past but rather than be too reflective like on the aforementioned project, she’s turning the focus onto the lessons she’s learned...

Now with her release of her fifth album Confident, Lovato isn’t afraid to show that she’s grown up, but also she isn’t afraid to keep speaking her mind and show some “sexiness”.

While Confident is by no means the powerful artistic statement of say, Carly Rae Jepsen’s Emotion (few pop albums are this year, if any), it generally echoes CRJ’s disinterest with chasing the zeitgeist of current genre sounds.
