'Communique' pretty much sounds like its predecessor, but without the payoff punch of a song like "Sultans of Swing."

Again, I reiterate that none of these defects is enough to condemn the record by itself. It's just that when they are all combined together, you suddenly realize that while the form is still the same, the breathtaking magic has all but evaporated.

The album is saved from mediocrity by the fact that Dire Straits remain a topnotch band, and are thus able to make even a decidedly lesser LP enjoyable

Across the first two Dire Straits albums – the second, Communiqué, is very much a retread of the first, and between the two of them you could just about assemble one really good LP

Communique was very much like a second disc of Dire Straits’ debut. However, the comparisons stop with songs like "Where Do You Think You’re Going?," "Single Handed Sailor" and "Follow Me Home," which demonstrate more accomplished lyric writing and musicianship.

A magnificent album from first to last note. Nine titles that have not aged and a production still relevant.
