The singer’s new mixtape is a playful and adventurous flex, full of errant, shapeshifting compositions that flirt with choral music and Afrobeats, schoolyard chants and squeak-rapping.

I think "Caprisongs" is her most honest and authentic project she's released. And I think that's when you really see, like, the heart of her as a musician but as a person as well. It really feels like she's been able to blossom in her vulnerability and really share that with her listeners.

Darkness turns to light in Tahliah Barnett’s follow-up to 2019 LP Magdalene but, even so, it’s an adventurous but undercharged effort missing hooks and cohesion.

And whether it represents a new direction for twigs’ sound or just a different expression of her creative drive, it will certainly go down as an indelible chapter in the story of one of contemporary pop’s most intriguing minds.

That there’s a contribution from the world’s most-streamed artist is almost lost among the noise, but that The Weeknd’s turn on ‘tears in the club’ blends in on this release probably just proves the only reason twigs hasn’t yet topped the charts is because she hasn’t yet wanted to.

There is a playful nature to CAPRISONGS, especially in the interludes that explore relationships and their various machinations. CAPRISONGS captures the feeling of love, heartbreak and community. It is that community that helps you get through the tough times in life and this is an ode to them and the need to be back with friends having fun.

  • Stereogum

Though CAPRISONGS lacks the exactitude of FKA Twigs’ proper albums, as a lower stakes throat-clearing exercise, I can’t fault it for sounding a bit scattered. Sure, it’s not as focused as her best work, but there’s enough to latch onto to make it worthwhile. As Twigs has learned, sometimes it’s OK to just have some fun, and maybe in the process you discover something in yourself that you didn’t know was there before.

It may feel a bit out of step with the rest of the record, but it fits for the end of a mixtape – this is twigs recording her final dedication to those to whom she’s gifting it. She’s letting her guard down, speaking from the heart, and sealing it with a kiss.

Despite all this vulnerability, however, there is always hope (“I just wanna go outside and feel the sun is shinin’ on my better side”, jealousy feat. rema). Through sampling Olive (You’re Not Alone) and collaborating with Jorja Smith and Unknown T on darjeeling, Twigs emphasises how even through the loneliest times, there is hope and togetherness to be found in others and in yourself.

  • The Rice Thresher

Throughout the album, FKA Twigs washes us in a tunefully ecstatic journey of growth, love and community. Against the backdrop of “MAGDALENE”, a harrowingly beautiful open wound released in the context of two traumatic, high profile relationships, Twigs takes the opportunity to show us how far she has come. Her love for those around her and for musical experimentation and introspection is reflected in the euphoric hall-of-mirrors that is “CAPRISONGS” as Twigs urges us to call up our friends and dance our problems away.

Across its 17 tracks, twigs sounds free and light, unburdened by the high-octane concepts that have saturated her previous albums.

  • Loud and Quiet

The only real through-line on CAPRISONGS, outwith a loose lyrical fixation on astrological themes and between-track transitions provided by snippets of conversations with friends, is the sense that this might be the most that Twigs has ever enjoyed herself in the studio. When that atmosphere emerges so infectiously from the speakers, what’s to be gained from overanalysing it?

FKA twigs’ road to self-discovery is at once spiritual, fun, and painful; it is a journey that requires a soundtrack as genre-bending and honest as CAPRISONGS.

If the album doesn’t tickle the back of the brain in the same way LP1 or Magdalene did, the tone of Caprisongs, lyrically and musically, is clearly on the upside, the songs are comfortably on the welcoming side, and the result should quite reasonably be on the winning side.

  • Addicted to EDM

FKA Twigs is no stranger to commercial success, but CAPRISONGS may be her best shot at going supernova. “Tears In The Club” is a banger and has been hitting already. In the context of the album, it fits perfectly with the ideas of heartbreak, but also using fun and friends to power through. CAPRISONGS puts you on the emotional roller coaster of being in love, having it not reciprocated and the painful process of dealing with breakups.

  • The Indiependent

CAPRISONGS might be less serious than her previous offerings, but what it lacks in a heavy heart, it makes up for with its reckless abandon. Twigs plunges herself into genre after genre in a whirlwind of noise and emotion. Despite the comforting presence of her friends, CAPRISONGS feels like FKA twigs is swept up in a restless and dizzying movement between places, people, and feelings.

  • Under the Radar Magazine

The designation of “mixtape” provides a curious framework for a musician who is known for being exacting and meticulous in every aspect of her art, from aesthetic to sound. But the structure, or perhaps the lack thereof, provides twigs with a new, more open playground. Many of the songs barely exceed the three-minute mark, granting the mixtape an intentionally fragmental quality where the vision is still vivid, but looser. If MAGDALENE was an encapsulation of FKA twigs’ internal storm, CAPRISONGS is the sunrise after the fact, brilliant and vibrant as ever.

Nevertheless though, CAPRISONGS stands as what I feel will be an iconic musical moment of 2022. After all, a vast amount of its tracks are already living rent-free in my head. If you are yet to listen to it, you may find yourself feeling the same way once you have.
