  • Saving Country Music

All of these critical observations are shared from a place of love and belief in this artist, because we know what Tyler Childers is capable of. And though Can I Take My Hounds To Heaven? illustrates some of those possibilities in the initial songs—and again, this shouldn’t be overlooked or discounted—this album should have been an EP, or fleshed out with a few more original tracks instead of whatever this marketing and packaging monstrosity of an album turned out to be.

Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? is proof that artists like Childers should never be pigeon-holed; they can bring to life anything they set their minds to with flawless execution.

Aside from his haunting and unique voice that audiences have fallen in love with, his songwriting reflects how much of an intellectual he is, and allows us to go along with the different, and often heavy, topics he ponders.

  • No Depression

As a thought experiment and creative exercise, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? is bold and fascinating. Because of that and the choice to balance repetition with an abrasive sonic detour, it’s sure to elicit a polarizing reaction from listeners expecting a more predictable bluegrass-country release. Taken as a whole, it confirms Childers’ burgeoning reputation for thoughtful, provocative work and his willingness to pursue his own muse without catering to audience expectations.

Childers has proven himself to be an excellent songwriter, however while trying to explore unfamiliar territory in terms of production, his attempt to create something unique ends up sounding like a child’s production using Garage Band on their iPad. Creating a Frankenstein-like sound fusing country, funk and electronic music, the final eight tracks on “Can My Hounds Go To Heaven?” manage to erase any redeeming qualities from the previous 16. This album is not for typical country fans. To call it country at all is an oversimplification of the sound that Childers created.

Overall, the album was built up too much leaving people more disappointed than they would hope. However, at the end of the day it is full of comfort music that will allow Childers’ fans to add some extra music to their playlists.

Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? doesn't feel like a retro throwback as much as a continuation, a record that comfortably fits into American roots lineage while making a convincing case for Tyler Childers as a singular artist.

In the end, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? mixes its big ideas with high energy for a memorable and unusual experience. Whether listeners pick one disc as their primary one, use the set like an archivist, or mix-and-match doesn’t make much difference. Childers has set a big table and invited everyone.

Yes, you're going to need to set aside a large block of time to fully experience Tyler Childers' gospel extravaganza. However, it's well worth your time. Whether it's country, Americana or (now) gospel music, Childers always puts his unique fingerprint on everything he creates, which makes him an artist of the highest caliber. Here, he is both extremely ambitious and also extremely successful.
