  • The Upcoming

Bigger Love bounces between genres and styles, negotiating its way carefully through soul and RnB for the most part and staying away from the classical ballads he’s famous for. It’s a welcome change and we bob along with him for the next few songs.

this is still a strong collection of songs that might dilute the impact of the standout tracks a tad purely via placement. But it’s still a surprisingly easy listen, even clocking in at an impressive 57 minutes.

While there are a few mellow, borderline boring signature John Legend slow songs, Bigger Love also shows people a new, experimental side of Legend’s music. Listeners get tastes of multiple genres and styles, as well as some fun features. It’s refreshing to hear his swoon-worthy voice and lyrical talent reach new heights. Definitely worth a listen if people have the chance.

With Bigger Love, Legend has created a refreshingly optimistic, anti-cynical soul food, and proven he's still got the 'it factor'.

Bigger Love is formulaic. There is little to expect from it, but, in return, the album expects little of the listener. It is not a terrific album, but it is a friendly listen, and there is something to be said for that.

the album stutters from a slight lack of purpose – at times, it feels like all foreplay and no action.

John Legend takes some risks on Bigger Love, which is imperfect, but more often than not, an enjoyable contemporary R&B album.

While the beginning of the album was amazing, I started to get burnt out and bored during the second half of the album. It seemed like there were a lot of filler tracks as the album went on and that he didn’t contribute anything new. If some of the boring and less adventurous tracks were removed from the album, I think it would have had more potential.

  • No Ripcord

It’s a signifier of what this album represents: a pop album designed by committee with one sexy face out in front. Legend doesn’t even try to get you to believe in him. He just moves along, accepting spots at award shows and pretending that someone cares about his music.

Overall, “Bigger Love” is an album for all fans of John Legend, with its mix of upbeat pop-inspired songs and ballads classic of Legend’s earlier sound. Whether you like his new music or his older music, “Bigger Love” has it all, and does so with elegance and purpose, as Legend manages to evolve his sound while staying true to his roots: a real and raw talent.

  • Ben's Beat

Bigger Love is the sound of an artist who has been at it a long time and received every accolade there is to receive understanding what exactly it is that he does best and giving it to the people. While there might have been a case to be made for more experimentation, so much of what makes Legend an enduring force is just how genuine he comes off, and he combines that with some excellent musicality here.

Even though the album struggles a bit at the end with its sluggishness, it’s still a good and enjoyable record. If this is the direction that Legend is planning to take, then we shall be assured of some good hits coming our way.

These songs get in and make their point without overstaying their welcome. They're also infectious and, generally speaking, uplifting — this album feels good, not the least of which has to do with Legend's impassioned vocal performances. Overall, a great Summer album.
