It would be the easiest thing in the world to dismiss A Year Without Rain as a cynical implementation of fan base exploitation; Gomez is, with regards to a certain demographic, a licence to print money. She also, however, boasts an embarrassment of talents, and those talents are more often than not afforded the space to breathe on a solid pop offering.

"A Year Without Rain" is as sunny as advertised.

The music on this album despite the easy listening sounds for the music fans a la Britney Spears, Ke $ ha, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry, was already too generic. It has been done a thousand times before. Especially the content of the lyrics that are too market and do not offer anything new. In general, this album contains dance-pop and slow ballads. Nothing new. The songs are still bubble gum, incomparable vocal arrangements, dance floor friendly, catchy and light melodies, plus hooks that are easy to remember.

Even at its worst, "Rain" is a marked improvement over Gomez's attitude-heavy debut, "Kiss and Tell," although it's otherwise the most synthetic of synth-pop discs. Gomez makes the best of it, but she spends most of the disc trying to dig herself out from under a mountain of vocal effects so obliterating, it's impossible to tell whether "Rain" squanders her talents or exaggerates them.

There would have been no shame in trying to recapture the more diverse and more fun approach of Kiss & Tell -- it is a formula that is a proven winner, after all. If A Year Without Rain was Selena's first album, it may not have reached that same level of success. Then again, an album full of songs as catchy and as well sung as "Round & Round," "A Year Without Rain," and "Off the Chain" just might have done the trick.

A Year Without Rain, Selena Gomez & The Scene's second album, is full of dance floor-friendly synth pop, probably more suited to a slightly older set than her teen-targeted TV show, and with less of a rock edge than fellow Disney Stars Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato.

Though not the most amazing vocalist to ever release an album, she has a lot of great dance tracks that I will definitely continue to listen to on repeat. This is one of the few Disney stars that I am not ashamed to have on my iPod.

If you hate pop, this is definitely not for you. If you want the next best album of all time, again, not for you. If you prefer quantity over quality and don’t mind singing along to catchy tunes I can definitely recommend this album to you.
